Max Blumenthal — Why Scrapping the Confederate Flag Is a Threat to a Huge Swath of the Right-Wing Movement

If you thought that the Confederate battle flag was just about racism, you would be wrong. And you would be more wrong if you thought it was about commemorating Southern history and tradition.

"You have argued that Ron Paul is at least a neo-Confederate sympathizer who has worked intimately with the movement. How is this the case?

ES: He was a keynote speaker at a secession conference planned by the Ludwig Von Mises Institute, which advocates secession quite openly. The Lew Rockwell institute is sort of a confederate libertarian organization and also neo-monarchist, and Paul maintains close ties with them. He has always worked directly within the movement."

Like father like son?

I'd like to see all of these libertarians kicked out of the GOP once and for all and we can re-build the GOP coalition from there... let the libertarians form their own party...

Sebesta's observations are spot on.

I have a lot of Southern friends who have bought into that Neo-Confederate crap, that blacks were happier when they were slaves, that there never really was a race problem, etc.. It would be hilarious if it weren't so sad.

They had and still have their own party that fields candidates. They never got popular traction, so they decided to invade the GOP and have been pretty successful in disrupting it.
